The Fly by Night Musicians Club is a not for profit community musicians club and music venue located in the heart of Fremantle, Western Australia.

An update on the future of The Fly

As most of you are already aware last month the National Trust made public their decision to hand over the lease of the Military Drill Hall, our Venue, to Sunset Events. Our lease was set to expire this month, but has been extended until March next year. No formal dates have yet been confirmed with the National Trust or Sunset Events. So where does this leave The Fly?

This month has been a massive gear change for The Fly, from fighting the National Trust’s decision to now finding a new home for the Fly.

Although leaving the Military Drill Hall will be heartbreaking, the community support we have received since our lease first became at risk has truly reaffirmed our belief in the worth of this organisation. Over 8000 signatures were received from those wishing to keep the Fly in the Drill Hall, a tribute to the community The Fly has fostered over 28 in Fremantle. We could not be more proud and thankful to see the strength of a community rally.

Upon the National Trust’s announcement Mayor Brad Pettitt commented, “A really important next step will be working with the Fly by Night Musicians Club to get them as seamlessly as possible into another venue in Fremantle. Whether it be Victoria Hall, the former Kulcha venue or something else – it is essential that this much loved and iconic music institution continues to thrive in Fremantle.” (Read his full post here)

Several options have been explored, including the Fremantle Council’s proposed options, Victoria Hall and the old Kulcha space. While it remains our goal to stay in Fremantle, we have extended our search for a new home to the greater Perth area.

This is an exciting time for The Fly as we explore our potential venue options in terms of how we as an organisation may grow to best utelise each individual space. The reality is any venue change will impact the Fly’s operations as both a commercial venue and community organisation. In searching for a new venue we are reluctant to compromise on venue capacity or acoustic quality as we wish to maintain our operations and reputation as a world class music venue. That said, we are still exploring all potential venue prospects.

We will endeavor to keep the community up to date as we move forward with shaping the future of The Fly. To keep in the loop you can subscribe to our newsletter or like us on Facebook.

For the remainder of this year, The Fly By Night is still operating as per usual in the Military Drill Hall. We are still welcoming bookings, rehearsal space hire and community use of our beautiful venue!
