– Rose Parker is an acclaimed singer, songwriter and guitarist who draws from folk, gospel, blues and alternative country to craft clear-eyed songs of hope and resignation, humour and grief, gratitude and resilience ….forward thinking…backward glancing…broad minded…an observer of people.. places.. journeys and stories
Rose discovered the power of music and the joy of song as a child growing up in orphanages and foster homes. Music was a way to interact, to communicate and to connect. Her mother and grandmother were both gifted and intuitive musicians and singers and in the precious time that they had together, taught her sing and harmonise around the kitchen table.
At the age of 12, Rose was given a watch, a guitar and a radio. At her first guitar lesson, her teacher recognised her natural gift for singing and promptly began to teach her to play and sing. She sang and played her way through Applecross High School musicals, school camps, church choirs and accapella groups and as a backing vocalist for other artists while working her own song writing craft and overcoming nerves and stage fright!
In 1995, she joined forces with another talented female, singer songwriter, guitarist – Martine Locke and they formed the Velvet Janes, around a mutual love of song writing, percussive guitar rhythms and powerhouse harmony vocals.
The Janes established a fiercely loyal fan base over the 12 years they worked and toured together. They produced and released one EP and 3 Albums of original music, toured extensively through Australia, USA and Canada and opened for many artists including: The Cowboy Junkies, Ani DiFranco, Luka Bloom, Arlo Guthrie, Diesel, The Black Sorrows, Weddings Parties Anything , Mick Thomas , the Waifs and performed at most major music festivals in Australia . After touring nationally with Ani DiFranco they secured Visas to live and work in the USA . The Velvet Janes immersed themselves in the Bay area of San Fransisco playing clubs and festivals from San Diego to San Jose and Phoenis to Chicago…taking their Aussie brand of folk to eager American audiences and performed at one of the most famous folk clubs in the world..The Bitter End in Bleecker st in Grenwich Village New York and the prestigous Michigan Womyns Music Festival….an amazing week in a forest with 4000 women only!!
Rose returned to her beloved Australia in 2003 and continued a creative evolution from the hard earned foundation focusing on writing new material and performing at pubs clubs and festivals while also raising her son Zac, a journey many of her fans are aware of due to one of her most requested tunes “Zac’s Song”.
Rose also facilitates workshops on songwriting singing and performance and contributes to many community and charity events in her hometown of Perth and her vibrant arts focused community in Fremantle
She has penned songs specifically for certain organisations to use in their charity work including
Keep The Flame Alive for the Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation
Always By My Side for Angel Hands
The Long Journey Home…Song For The Forgotten Australians
Rose is often requested as a singer and speaker at conference events that explore social innovation and change,(most recently at the opening of The Social Impact Festival at UWA…July 2016) and the journey of healing in relation to children in care and recovery from trauma.
She is national ambassador for the Blue Knot Foundation (formerly ASCA…Adults Surviving Childhood Abuse)
An Ep Of 4 new songs was released in 2015 ..stripped back to highlight just voice guitar and violin featuring the wonderful strings of Phoebe Corke and released at the Nannup Folk Festival….a taste of things to come
