Martin & Coole
‘The Roaring Gimlet’ with Crystal Jade
Martin & Coole are a contemporary folk swing blues duo featuring the songs of Jonathan Cope and Emma Birkett.
Following two sold-out shows for the launch of their debut album ‘The Roaring Gimlet’ at the Kidogo Arthouse in March, Martin & Coole return to Fremantle to play a concert at the Fly By Night Club on Saturday 9 September.
‘The Roaring Gimlet’ was recorded live and acoustic at Shanghai Twang studio in January 2017 and features ten original tracks blending acoustic folk, swing, country, blues, and bluegrass music influences.
The songs are generally set in a local West Australian context sharing modern and old stories; like the true tale about a friend that spent a night in a maximum-security prison for not wearing his bicycle helmet; a FIFO (Fly-in Fly-out) widow’s lament; or the trad style folk ballad about Goongarrie, a Goldfields ghost town out near Lake Ballard in central Western Australia.
The sound of Jon and Emma’s close vocal harmonies, guitar, ukulele, harmonica and mandolin is embellished by Ian Simpson on dobro, banjo and guitar; Rob Zielinski on fiddle; John Perry on double bass; and special guest Xiao Xuan on yangqin, the traditional Chinese dulcimer.
The Fly By Night concert will feature all the musicians that played on ‘The Roaring Gimlet’, plus an opening set of Chinese music by Crystal Jade featuring Merlin (Chinese flute), Xiao Xuan (yangqin) and Malcolm Mah (double bass and percussion).
