Fly By Night & Clancy’s Fremantle present Baka Beyond, the original Afro-Celt dance-band, inspired by the music of the rain forest.
UK band Baka Beyond hit the road for their first Australian Tour headlining at the National Folk Festival, Canberra and Fairbridge Festival, WA.
The six-piece band were formed twenty years ago by UK musicians Martin Craddick and Su Hart. They were inspired by the music of the Baka pygmy rainforest people of Cameroon who Martin and Su visited, learning their music and their way of life.
Baka Beyond bring together African and UK musicians, blending their various music styles into an infectious, joyous and inclusive music. Their latest (8th) studio album ‘After The Tempest’, was released in 2014.
‘Baka Beyond are the perfect festival band. . . . great for parties and concerts. They are the full package. Our audiences love them.’ Terry Wickham, producer of Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Canada.
‘. . . if you are not dancing, maybe you should have someone check your pulse.’ Evening Standard.
‘If there has to be a definition of world music, this is it.’ Andy Kershaw, BBC.
Baka Beyond members still regularly visit the Baka in Cameroon, returning royalties earned by their music and helping them to use the money for community development projects through the charity they set up, Global Music Exchange. A large performance space has been built as well as work done in health and education. With the forest and therefore their lifestyle under threat, it helps that the Baka’s music and culture is appreciated worldwide.
